Further Information About The Manufacture Of Jewellery

The manufacture of jewellery is a highly skilled craft involving many techniques which might range from the initial design through engraving to enamelling. Fundamentally though, the work of the jeweller can be divided into two arts, one of mounting and the other of setting. It is the goldsmith who creates the body of a jewel or mount. This may be cast from an original carving in wax or wrought directly from sheet gold and wire drawn to the desired thickness through a mill. Setting the jewel with diamonds or precious stones requires a combination of a finely trained eye with manual dexterity, as tiny claws or pips are raised in the precious metal to secure the stones integral to the piece.
