A fine Italian 19th century micromosaic bracelet. A truly beautiful example from this period in history. Made in the Papal state, this piece is infused in symbolism. The Greek letters Alpha, Chi Rho and Omega, are placed together to signify the life of Christ. Alpha and Omega, being the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, and Chi Rho, which combines the two letters X and P and used as an abbreviation of Christos (Christ), signifying Christ’s resurrection. Thus, together these letters represent Christ as the beginning and end. This image is further supported with the use of butterflies, which the Victorian’s associated with the soul and transformation, reflecting the transformation of Christ, and the Dove of Peace, symbolizing the Holy Spirit. Steeped in religious messaging, this piece could have possibly been purchased as a memento of their travels whilst undertaking the Grand Tour of Europe.
