A Late Victorian Ruby And Diamond Butterfly Brooch

Description

A late Victorian ruby and diamond brooch in the form of a butterfly, with the wings set en tremblant, total diamond weight estimated 14 carats, total rubies weight estimated 12 carats, to a silver and yellow gold mount, circa 1860, measuring 6.4 x 4cm, gross weight 23.8 grams, see John Sheldon sale catalogue lot 375.

A magnificent late Victorian brooch, exemplifying late nineteenth century whimsical taste. This large brooch features an impressive combined 14 carats of lively and glittering diamonds and 12 carats of bright and vivid rubies. Each wing is set en tremblant, meaning “to tremble”: the wings are set with small metal coils, which allow the wings to tremble and move as if the butterfly is alive. En tremblant jewellery is particularly evocative of a Victorian evening occasion: when worn, the wings would move and flutter as the wearer moved, allowing even greater sparkle in the candlelight of the room. This brooch is a fabulous statement piece and would look stunning mounted on the front of a dress for a spring or summer occasion.
