A French Nineteenth Century Gem-set Horseshoe Locket

Description

A French mid nineteenth century gold, ruby, emerald and diamond locket, the round satin-finish yellow gold locket set to the front with a motif of three interlocked horseshoes, one of emeralds, one of rubies, the other of diamonds, the locket opening to reveal a photograph of a lady, approximate diameter of locket 26mm, circa 1880, bearing French assay marks, gross weight 19.2 grams.

A wonderful late nineteenth century locket. Horseshoes have long been associated with good luck, and this locket features three interlocked lucky horseshoes. One horseshoe is set with deep and vibrant rubies, one with lush and bright emeralds, and the other with lively diamonds. This sweet locket was owned by Alexander Georgievich, 7th Duke of Leuchtenberg, a member of the Russian Imperial family who was born in 1881 and died in 1942. During the Russian Revolution, Alexander made several attempts to save his cousin Tsar Nicholas II and his family but was unsuccessful. He became a member of the White movement and was a strong monarchist but fled to France where he lived in exile until his death. The locket opens, and currently holds a photograph of a lady from the period, most likely Alexander’s mother, Duchess Therese Petrovna of Oldenburg, a descendant of Paul I of Russia who died when Alexander was two years old. This special and historical locket would look stunning on either a thick period appropriate Victorian guard chain, or on a thinner chain as a modern statement piece.
