More informationAn early Victorian blue enamel, pearl and diamond locket, to the centre a 18th century miniature portrait depicting the head of a lady in a blue dress, within a border of old-cut diamonds on a blue enamel oval mount set with half pearls and rose-cut diamonds in foliate motifs, brooch pin to back and detachable pearl and diamond set pendant loop, inscribed to back “Frances Countess of Winchilsea and Nottingham died September 27th 1734, with fitted case, circa 1840, measuring 4.2 x 2.5 cm, gross weight 17.1 grams.
A delightful antique portrait brooch. The tiny, delicately painted portrait of a lady with pale skin and blue dress is complemented by the pretty decorative surround and deep blue hue of the enamel. This locket has a pendant fitting so can be worn as a necklace if preferred. The portrait miniature depicts Frances Finch, Countess of Winchilsea and Nottingham. The Countess of Winchilsea and Nottingham was born in 1690 and died in 1734. She was one of the aristocratic women who signed the Ladies’ Petition to support the establishment of the Foundling Hospital. This wonderful brooch is a beautiful memorial of the Countess’ life and role as a social reformer.
