An Important Giuliano Renaissance-Revival Brooch

Description

An important Giuliano Renaissance-Revival gold and enamel gem-set brooch, the brooch decorated with the figure of Venus enamelled en ronde bosse, holding up a diamond-set mirror and an enamelled drape, seated under a canopy set with cushion-shaped rubies and rose-cut diamonds, a tiger couchant and a spray of pink roses at her feet, flanked by a pair of white doves holding pearl garlands connected to a pair of male mask heads supporting pearl fringes, an additional pearl fringe at the base, all in 18ct yellow gold, signed C.G., circa 1870, measuring approximately 8.3 cm long and 5.5 cm wide, gross weight 64.5 grams.

An exuberant and exceptional piece of wearable art. This brooch was made in the Renaissance revival style by jewellery Carlo Giuliano, who trained under Castellani in Italy and then opened his own shop in London in the 1870s. Giuliano was extremely talented at enamel work, and this work highlights his mastery of the technique. Stylistically, this piece draws inspiration from Renaissance-era pendants, but has a unique use of colour and detail. This piece features the nude figure of Venus, draped with a striped shawl and holding a mirror with a scintillating diamond in place of mirror glass. Venus sits in an enamelled and bejewelled temple, decorated with swags of pearls, doves, and intricate mask heads. Below her feet rests an exquisitely detailed tiger and two pink roses. Further pearls decorate and are suspended from the piece, adding detail. Unlike the work of the nineteenth craftsmen Reinhold Vasters and Alfred Andre, who also created Renaissance-style pendants, Giuliano’s piece does not attempt to faithfully copy Renaissance design but instead provides a unique and brightly colourful twist on the Renaissance pendant style. This remarkable piece is a sumptuous example of Giuliano’s work.
