An Early Twentieth Century Wasp Brooch

Description

An early twentieth century diamond, enamel and crystal wasp brooch, the black and yellow enamel body with rose-cut diamond-set head, the frosted rock crystal wings with carved veins and rose-cut diamond details, all set in yellow gold and platinum, with sliding safety catch, circa 1925, bearing Austrian mark for 14 carat gold, measuring approximately 4.4×2.3cm, gross weight 9.72 grams.

A wonderfully detailed and naturalistic brooch made in the 1920s. This brooch takes the form of a detailed bee, crafted from enamel, crystal, yellow gold and platinum. The bee’s head and the edge of its wings are set with lively diamonds, and the wings are delicate frosted rock crystal. The wings are exquisitely lifelike, with carved veins. The frosted crystal allows a glimpse at the black and yellow body of the bee beneath the wings. This piece exemplifies naturalistic style and exquisite craftsmanship.
