A wonderfully naturalistic brooch in the shape of a lizard. This lizard brooch was made in in the late 19th century and is set throughout with bright green demantoid garnets. Along the lizard’s spine is a row of lively diamonds, and the creature’s eyes are set with cabochon-cut rubies. The detailed legs are carved from yellow gold and feature further glinting diamonds. Jewellery in the shape of animals, particularly lizards and insects, was very popular in the late Victorian period, and this is an exemplary piece. This sparkling and characterful brooch would be the perfect finishing touch for an outfit worn to a smart summer party.
