A wonderful archaeological revival pendant. During the mid-nineteenth century, jewellers became fascinated with recreating the styles and techniques of the ancient world. This was due in part to excavations and exhibitions that captivated the imaginations of nineteenth century Europeans. This piece features a square Greek cross set with and surrounded by fine yellow gold decorations in the style of Ancient motifs. Rosettes adorn the inside of the cross and acanthus leaves adorn the outside, combining to create a fabulously antique design. The rosettes and leaves are decorated with extremely fine filigree and granulation work, echoing the techniques of the ancient period. This piece can be worn as either a pendant or a brooch, giving it versatility.
