A magnificent cross pendant made by Robert Phillips. Robert Phillips was one of the most sought-after revivalist jewellers of the nineteenth century. This stunning and important piece features meticulous detail and craftsmanship: the ornate design echoes crosses seen in Medieval paintings and decorating Medieval reliquaries. Phillip’s work, can be seen in the permanent collections of museums such as The British Museum, The Ashmolean, and The Fitzwilliam. This piece features a cross made from banded agate, the white bands lining up in perfect symmetry. The agate catches the light beautifully and has an enchanting glow to it. Surrounding the cross is a plethora of ornate openwork gold decorations, all featuring typically Gothic style pointed motifs. This stunning piece is a remarkable example of Phillip’s craftsmanship and of gothic revival style. It was previously owned by David Ormsby-Gore, Lord Harlech.
