More informationA late Victorian opal and diamond crescent brooch, the brooch set with eleven oval-shaped cabochon-cut opals graduated to the centre, estimated to weigh a total of 2.5 carats, alternately set with rows of old-cut diamonds, estimated to weigh a total of 1.30 carats, all claw-set to a yellow gold mount with brooch fitting and safety chain, circa 1870, measuring approximately 3.2×2.9cm, gross weight 7.40 grams.
A lovely late Victorian opal and diamond brooch. This brooch is in the shape of a crescent moon, a popular motif in Victorian jewellery. The crescent moon had many symbolic associations, one of which was the honeymoon. This association meant that crescent moon jewellery began to be incorporated into wedding day ensembles for Victorian brides. This gorgeous piece features eleven seafoam green opals, between which are set scintillating old cut diamonds. A romantic and pretty brooch.
