An exquisite and delicate butterfly brooch, made in Vienna in around 1890. The wings on this butterfly are made using the technique of plique-a-jour or “letting in the daylight”. This technique essentially uses enamel as a form of stained glass, giving the wings on this butterfly brooch a wonderful transparency. The blue of the wings is beautifully complimented by the central cabochon ruby set into the thorax of the butterfly. This wonderfully detailed piece is an example of exquisite late nineteenth century craftsmanship.
