More informationA Stuart crystal and gold brooch, the octagonal faceted crystal with a gold cypher to the back, the reversed cypher with the initials CWC surrounded by a twisted ribbon-like gold-wire decoration that symbolises the eternal love, all in a closed-back gold mount with gold scroll decorations to the sides, engraved with initials SK to the back, circa 1700, with gold pendant and brooch fitting, measuring 2.4 x 1cm, gross weight 2.3 grams.
The above piece is over 100 years old and as therefore antique.
Stuart crystal jewellery was popularized as mourning jewellery following the execution of King Charles I in 1649, when the Stuart followers at Court adopted this style of crystal as a symbol of their fallen King. Stuart crystal took on a more personal nature later in the 17th century as in this example. This piece is a unique and beautiful example of Stuart crystal and would look excellent on a scarf or lapel.
