A Victorian Holbeinesque garnet and chrysoberyl brooch, to the centre an oval cabochon garnet measuring 14.5 x 12mm, surrounded by openwork scroll designed frame with polychrome champlevé enamel decorations, flanked by four square faceted chrysoberyls, suspending a garnet-set drop, all mounted in gold, with hair locket compartment on the reverse and gold brooch fitting, circa 1870, measuring 4.3 x 3.3cm, gross weight 11.8 grams,

A spectacular Holbeinesque garnet and chrysoberyl brooch. Holbeinesque is a term used to describe Victorian jewellery that was made in the style of the Renaissance, particularly inspired by the Northern Renaissance and the paintings of Hans Holbein. Holbein produced sketches of the jewellery worn at the Tudor court, and the sketches were used as reference points by Victorian jewellery designers and craftsmen. This brooch, is intricate and ornate. Featuring a central garnet surrounded by an openwork enamel frame set with chrysoberyls, this piece is typical of high Victorian style. The enamel is bright and detailed, and the stones glow beautifully.
