An Art Deco giardinetto brooch

Description

An Art Deco giardinetto brooch, the base in the form of a vase, centrally-set with a trapezoid-cut diamond weighing 1.41 carats ad accompanied by GIA report stating to be of D colour and VS1 clarity, to a pierced platinum mount encrusted with baguette and round brilliant-cut diamonds, estimated to weigh approximately a further total of 4 carats, the articulated handles set with small calibre-cut synthetic rubies, the top with a foliate arrangement formed by sixteen marquise-cut coloured diamonds, the eight larger diamonds accompanied by GIA reports stating their colour to be of natural origin and ranging from Fancy Intense to Fancy Vivid orange-yellow, the total weight of the coloured diamonds is 5.37 carats, embellished with small square-cut synthetic rubies, all mounted in platinum with gold pin and pendant loop on reverse, circa 1930, measuring 5.2 x 4cm, gross weight 22.9 grams.

A gorgeous Giardinetto brooch. This beautiful brooch is striking example of Art Deco design, featuring a geometric vase centrally set with a trapezoid-cut diamond of an impressive colour and clarity. The vase is filled with bright yellow marquise-cut diamonds, and lively calibre-cut rubies interspersed throughout, to create the image of a magnificent and lively bouquet of flowers. The red handles of the vase contrast beautifully against the cool coloured diamonds. Of naturalistic style with foliate motifs, and set with colourful stones, Giardinetto jewellery dates to the 17th century and got its name from the Italian word for “Little Garden”. The interest in Giardinetto jewellery was revived in the 1920s and celebrated by many jewellers such as Cartier, Bouchardon and Van Cleef. Although the piece is not signed, it bears all of the qualities and craftmanship of the best workshops of the period. Full of character, this brooch would make a sophisticated statement pinned to a scarf over a formal gown for an evening event.
