A pair of Victorian micro-mosaic drop earrings, the circular plaque at the centre depicting a cupid, within a frame of geometric design, all set in yellow gold, suspended by a gold domed top with wire hook fittings, circa 1860, measuring approximately 3 x 1.6cm, gross weight 8 grams.
A charming and exquisitely crafted pair of earrings. These earrings feature the technique of micro-mosaic, in which tiny pieces of glass are arranged in a mosaic to form an image. Each earing features a wonderfully detailed putti head with wings, surrounded by a circular border of a red and blue pattern. Each mosaic is mounted in bright yellow gold. Micro-mosaic jewellery became very popular during the nineteenth century, when Europeans would travel through Italy. Earrings and other pieces of micro-mosaic jewellery made in Rome became popular souvenirs, and this pair of earrings is an exceptional example of fine, classically inspired micro-mosaic work.
