An arcaheological revival suite attributed to Guliano

Description

An arcaheological revival demi-parure, attributed to Guliano, consisting of a pair of earrings and pendant in the form of amphorae, with fine wire-work and white enamel decorations, encrusted with faceted rubies estimated to weigh 3¾ carats in total accompanied by GCS report stating to be of Burmese origin with no indication of heating, and embellished with rose-cut diamonds, all mounted in gold with ruby-set gold pendant and earrings fittings, circa 1870, the pendant measuring approximately 6.3 x 2.9cm, the earrings measuring approximately 4.5 x 2cm, gross weight 27.5 grams.

An important and resplendent demi-parure. Created c.1870, this piece follows in the nineteenth century tradition and trend of Greek revival. The spectacular urns are striking, made with excellent craftsmanship, and this special matching set includes eye-catching earrings and a dramatic pendant. This piece is attributed to Carlo Guliano. Carlo Guliano was known for his intricate revivalist style jewellery, which featured fine enamel work and gem-set decorations. Examples of his jewellery are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and others.
During the Victorian Era, there was a surge in archaeological excavation. Hidden treasures previously undisturbed for hundreds of years were being uncovered across Egypt, Greece and Italy. These finds inspired the artists and designers who saw them, and ancient motifs and designs became highly fashionable. This piece, fashioned in the shape of a Grecian urn, is a wonderful example of this period in jewellery design. Another interesting detail about this set, is the pendant’s glazed compartment to the reverse, where a piece of hair or picture can be placed. This harkens to the Victorian’s love of sentimentality, where jewellery often contained the hair, image or initials of their loved ones.
The soft hue of gold creates a wonderful background, enabling the delicate white of the enamel work and the richness of the rubies to be the focal point of the piece. The finishing touches of small diamonds add a wonderful touch of sparkle as they hang off the ear. A unique set.
