A handsome letter opener made by Fabergé. Fabergé was established in St Petersburg in 1842, and by the late nineteenth century, was Russia’s largest and best-known jewellery house. The house has become known for their royal commissions and their close ties to the family of Tsar Nicholas II. This piece is created from gold, with a glittering gem set handle. The handle is rendered using the technique of ‘samaradok’, a Russian technique that mimics the appearance of raw, natural gold. The gold is set with three stones, a sapphire, a ruby, and a diamond. This piece bears marks for workmaster Eric Kollin, who held a high position in the Fabergé workshop.
