A Late Georgian gold ring mounted with a Roman onyx intaglio, the oval- shaped onyx measuring approximately 11 x 8.5 mm, depicting Dionysus leaning on a column and holding a kantharos, carved in 1st-2nd century AD, rub-over set in later yellow gold mount, circa 1830, later stamped 850 and testing as 20ct gold, head measuring 1.8×1.5cm, finger size K ½, gross weight 11.6 grams.
An exquisite antique intaglio ring. It features an onyx intaglio of the Ancient Greek god Dionysus dating from the 1st-2nd century AD. This wonderful example of ancient history was set in a rich and bright 20 carat gold ring in the 1830s, when ancient intaglios had a resurgence in popularity. Dionysus is the god of the grape-harvest, winemaking and wine, fertility, festivity, and theatre, in the ancient Greek religion. He is also known as Bacchus or by his Roman name Liber. A wonderful, historical piece.
