A gold and carnelian pendant by Akelo, the oval carnelian engraved with the profile of a lady with headdress and long flowing hair, rub-over set within a drop-shaped gold frame, embellished with granulation clusters and a twisted wire work border, to a pendant loop and ornamental filigreed rosette, all in yellow gold, hallmarked 18ct gold, London, made by Andrea Cagnetti the Roman master goldsmith known as Akelo, measuring approximately 7.1 x 4.3cm, gross weight 30.4 grams.
A marvellous pendant. This piece, by the master goldsmith from Rome Andrea Cagnetti, known as Akelo, uses techniques and tools that have been practised in goldsmithing for thousands of years. Drawing inspiration from Etruscan, Greek, and Roman jewellery, Akelo’s designs are imbued with both antiquity and modernity. This pendant is created using the ancient technique of welding miniscule gold granules and features a women’s face in profile carved into a large piece of carnelian. Akelo’s work can be seen in the museum collections of The Vatican, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, The Newark Museum, and others.
