A pair of gold plaque earrings by Akelo, each elongated pear-shaped gold plaque, with twisted wire work border, decorated with an eye motif and circle design rendered using filigree and gold granulation, and embellished with granulation clusters, to a pendant loop, with wire hook fittings, all in yellow gold, hallmarked 18ct gold, London 2011, made by Andrea Cagnetti the Roman master goldsmith known as Akelo, measuring approximately 4.4 x 1.4cm, gross weight 7.4 grams. A wonderful and intricate pair of earrings. These earrings, named Menkar by the master goldsmith from Rome Andrea Cagnetti, known as Akelo, uses techniques and tools that have been practised in goldsmithing for thousands of years. Drawing inspiration from Etruscan, Greek, and Roman jewellery, Akelo’s designs are imbued with both antiquity and modernity. These earrings feature delicate filigree and granulation work, both characteristics of Akelo’s craftsmanship. Akelo’s work can be seen in the museum collections of The Vatican, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, The Newark Museum, and others.
