A Victorian Scarab Pendant
A Victorian scarab pendant, the Egyptian steatite scarab set within a yellow gold and enamel wing surround, marked 15ct gold, circa 1880, measuring approximately 4.9 x 2.3cm, gross weight 7.7 grams A Victorian pendant is in excellent condition. Unmarked tested as 15ct gold.
A fascinating and charming pendant. In 1798, Napoleon set off on a three-year journey to Egypt. This begun a nineteenth-century craze for Egyptian antiquities and jewellery in the style of ancient Egyptian artifacts. This pendant is a combination of revivalist jewellery and an excavated steatite scarab. The scarab is set within a gold frame decorated with exquisite enamel wings. To the back of the pendant, the underside of the scarab can be seen with its hieroglyphic details. This wonderful piece is truly a piece of history, both Victorian and Ancient, and would look perfect on a gold chain.
