An early nineteenth century Italian micro mosaic pendant and earring suite, to the centre a swimming duck surrounded by red, blue and white micro mosaic bordered by fine rope work all within a reeded bar gold frame decorated with micro mosaic trefoils suspending a micro mosaic tulip all in gold mount with brooch fitting to reverse, accompanied by similarly designed decorated earrings with green and red coloured fly to the centre and three lozenge drops to the bottom, made in Rome circa 1840, gross weight 32.3 grams.
A wonderfully crafted micro mosaic set. Micro mosaic is a technique of Ancient Roman art that had a resurgence in popularity in the nineteenth century in Italy. Tourists from England and other parts of Europe would visit Rome as part of their ‘grand tour’ of the ancient world, and many bought micro mosaic jewellery as souvenirs. This set was made in Rome and features exquisite mosaics. The pendant features the miniscule image of a tiny bird in a lake, surrounded by plants. The earrings feature the image of a detailed fly. Both the pendant and the earrings feature detailed yellow, red, blue, and white mosaic motifs which finely decorate the yellow gold setting. A remarkable suite.
