Pâte De Verre And Diamond Grapes Brooch By Fonsèque Et Olive

Brooch formed as a bunch of two grapes, the realistically looking grapes of pâte de verre, the stem set with rose-cut diamonds, in silver to a gold mount, French assay mark, Fonsèque et Olive, Paris,1889, measuring 2.5x2cm, gross weight 8.5 grams.

A charming late nineteenth century brooch. This brooch features two wonderfully realistic green grapes made from pâte de verre, a pressed glass often used by jewellers of this period, hanging from a gold vine set with lively diamonds. This naturalistic piece is a stellar example of the craftsmanship of Fonsèque et Olive, a firm of goldsmiths that made naturalistic designs such as towards the end of the 19th century. An almost identical brooch with three grapes instead of two is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
