A Victorian Aquamarine, Pearl and Gold Pendant-Necklace

A Victorian aquamarine, pearl and gold pendant-necklace, made in the archaeological style, the faceted cushion shape aquamarine measuring 15.9 x 15.7mm, surrounded by a double cluster of half-pearls and a gold frame with three gold rosettes and wirework decorations of foliate design in between, to the back with fine foliate and floral engravings, surrounded by a realistically carved snake made or rose gold with ruby-set eye, all mounted in gold and suspended by a gold pendant loop, the pendant measuring approximately 5.7 x 4.5cm, accompanied by snake chain measuring approximately 44cm long, circa 1870 gross weight 64.7 grams.

This beautiful pendant necklace wonderfully mixes archaeological revival style with classic mid-Victorian sensibility. The circular bright yellow gold pendant is decorated with wirework, inspired by the jewellery of the Ancient Etruscan people. At the centre of the pendant is a stunning aquamarine, framed beautifully by two rows of seed pearls. On the back side of the pendant, a detailed ouroboros, or snake eating its own tail, boarders the pendant. The serpent is realistically detailed, with a glinting ruby-set eye. Further typically Victorian foliate designs decorate the back of the pendant. This gorgeous and statement-making pendant is hung from a thick gold snake chain which would look stunning with a lightweight printed summer dress.
