A Late 19th Century French Dolphin Stick-pin

A late 19th century French dolphin stick-pin, the finely carved dolphin, with round cabochon-cut ruby-set eye, all made in yellow gold, bearing French hallmark for 18ct gold, makers mark with initials PD, circa 1890, the jewelled part measuring 1.3 x 1.2cm, gross weight 3.5 grams,

A wonderful little dolphin stick pin, made in the late nineteenth century. The dolphin motif featured on this stick pin is reminiscent of the dolphin motif featured in French and Italian renaissance and baroque interior design as well as architecture, which, in turn, was inspired by dolphin motifs from Ancient Rome. This charming creature has a glinting ruby eye and detailed scales and would make an elegant and sculptural addition to a twill suit.
