A Victorian Carved Hardstone Cameo Brooch
A Victorian carved hardstone cameo brooch, the circular carved hardstone depicting Eros accompanied by a lion, surrounded by yellow gold frame with beaded openwork border, unmarked, tested as 18ct gold, circa 1870, measuring approximately 2.7cm in diameter, gross weight 9.2 grams.
A very fine example of a neoclassical cameo brooch. This brooch features a carved hardstone depicting eros and a lion, a popular theme in Hellenistic art that was revived in the nineteenth century. The cameo is finely carved and set in a frame of warm yellow gold with a beaded border which adds to the charming neoclassical design. This piece would look lovely pinned to a jacket lapel or a silk scarf.
