A Georgian Carnelian Intaglio Ring
A Georgian carnelian intaglio ring, the oval cornelian measuring 2.1 x 1.8cms, seal-engraved with a classic male head, bearded and in profile, in a yellow gold setting with an open back and tapering gold shoulders, head measuring 2.1×1.8cm, finger size M, circa 1820, gross weight 7.7 grams.
An exquisite Georgian ring. It features a superb carved intaglio of depicting the profile of a man with an ancient Greek appearance. The profile is carved into a glowing deep orange carnelian stone and is rendered in detail. Neoclassical jewellery such as this piece became popular in the early nineteenth century, due in part to Napoleon’s interest in the ancient world and the sweeping interest in the arts and design of ancient Greece across Europe. Set in a simple gold setting and to a gold band, this ring exemplifies Georgian style.
