Coloured Diamonds

Most diamonds that are extracted from the earth are colourless. Fancy colour diamonds feature an array of vivid hues and have distinct and opulent colours. Fancy diamonds are valued for the intensity and distribution of colour and are extremely rare. For every 10,000 colourless diamonds found, only one natural colour diamond will be found. Yellow, orange, and brown diamonds are caused by the presence of nitrogen. Blue diamonds are caused by the presence of boron. Pink diamonds owe their special colour to graining, a process in which diamonds are subjected to great pressure under the earth’s surface. Fancy coloured diamonds have surged in popularity in fine jewellery in recent years. In 2002, Ben Affleck proposed to Jennifer Lopez with a 6.1 carat pink diamond engagement ring. Lopez’s ring sparked a celebrity trend for pink diamond engagement rings. In 2019, Lady Gaga was seen on the red carpet at the Academy Awards wearing a 128.54 carat yellow diamond necklace.
