A Victorian blue enamel serpent necklace, the Bristol blue enamelled serpent head with a central row of graduated half pearls, cabochon ruby eyes and a decorative coiled tail, suspending a heart shaped pendant drop from its mouth, all to a yellow gold snake chain with the clasp concealed behind the head, the jewelled part measuring approximately 3.8 x 1.4cm, the chain measuring approximately 45cms in length, circa 1840, gross weight 14.15 grams.
A charming Victorian necklace. Jewellery of all types in the shape of a serpent was extremely popular during the early Victorian period, owing partially to the snake ring given by Prince Albert to Queen Victoria on the occasion of their wedding. Suspended from a chain is a detailed deep blue enamel serpent. The body of the serpent forms both the clasp and main feature of this necklace, which is a clever detail. Hanging from the serpent’s mouth is a wonderfully enamelled heart locket. This necklace was made in about 1840, the height of popularity of serpent jewellery of this type.
