A Georgian mourning ring, the glazed oval plaque securing a lock of plaited hair within a rose-cut diamond surround, the reverse engraved “Frances Ashfordby, died 6 April 1774 aged 86”, Circa 1770, gross weight 3.4 grams.
This is a collectable and sentimental Georgian mourning ring, made in around 1774 to commemorate the death of Frances Ashfordby. It was common practice during the Georgian era to enclose a lock of hair from a deceased family member in a piece of jewellery to always carry them near. This ring is an excellent example of mourning jewellery from this era: the central oval plaque contains a lock of plaited hair and is surrounded by a circle of lovely rose-cut diamonds. This is a striking piece with lots of historical character.
