A Victorian pearl and emerald mourning ring, the octagonal-cut emerald surrounded by six half-pearls set in the form of flower petals, to the back a hair locket compartment, each shoulder set with a smaller emerald, the shank engraved with foliate and geometric decorations, all in yellow gold tested as 18ct, circa 1870, head measuring 1×1.6cm, finger size O, gross weight 3.1 grams.
A charming and sentimental Victorian ring. This ring features bright emeralds and luminous pearls: the central emerald forms the centre of a floral shape, and the pearls form the petals. The yellow gold band is ornately carved in a typically Victorian style, and there is a locket to the back of the ring to hold a lock of hair. This was a common Victorian practice: a lock of hair from a loved one or a deceased family member was often enclosed in jewellery to keep the person close to the wearer. This ring is a wonderful antique piece.
