A mid-Victorian multi-gem Acrostic Regard ring, the two cushion-shaped faceted rubies, the oval shaped faceted emerald, garnet and amethyst, and the rose-cut diamond, arranged to spell the word REGARD, all set in granulated yellow gold closed-back mount to pierced shoulders of scrolling design and tapered shank chased with delicate foliate motifs, hallmarked 15ct yellow gold, Birmingham, 1866, finger size M ½, measuring 16 x 7mm, gross weight 1.6 grams.
A delicate Mid-Victorian Regard Ring. The lively colour of the gemstones is accentuated by the softer tone of the gold, allowing the stones to draw the eye. The gemstones artfully spelling out “REGARD” indicates that this piece was most likely made as a token of affection for a loved one. The expert craftsmanship present during the Victorian period is highlighted by the graceful scrolling shoulders. The final touch of chasing that is present along the band shows this to be a piece that has had considerable thought put into its construction.
This would make a wonderful anniversary present.
When a piece of jewellery uses gemstones to spell out a hidden message, it is known technically as acrostic jewellery.
The origins of this style of jewellery are believed to have originated from the French courts of the Late 18 and 19th Century, where Jean-Baptiste Mellerio (1765-1850), designer of jewels for Marie Antoinette and the French court, is referenced as being the inventor of acrostic jewellery. Acrostic jewellery made its way to England during the Georgian Era, where it experienced a great vouge. This style of jewellery continued to remain popular well into the Victorian period.
