A George III oval soup tureen and cover on spreading foot, with beaded borders, the detachable domed cover with acanthus bud finial, the body with two reeded loop handles, engraved with presentation inscription within oval cartouche. The inscription reads “A small mark of GRATITUDE for the unremitted CARE and ATTENTION shown by Dr REYNOLDS to Mrs Billington during a severe and dangerous ILLNESS Jan 1790”, measuring 43 cm wide, gross weight 83ozs, London 1780, maker James Young. A remarkable George III soup tureen. This elegant piece was crafted by James Young, and features details such as reeded handles, beaded borders, and an acanthus bud finial on the detachable lid. The inscription on this piece suggests that it was given as a gift by a grateful patient to Dr Henry Revell Reynolds (1745-1811), a notable physician during the period. Reynolds was known for treating King George III and became physician-in-ordinary in 1806.
