More informationA 19th Century lapis lazuli bead and gold demi-parure, the necklace consisted of twenty four graduated lapis beads measuring from 17.8mm to 13.6mm, with yellow gold filigree decorations, suspending a lapis drop with a gold filigree cap, the matching earrings, each with two lapis beads and matching gold filigree decorations, with gold wire fittings, the necklace is measuring approximately 52cm long and the earrings 4.7cm long, gross weight 224.2 grams.
Filigree is a type of decoration in which fine, threadlike wires of precious metal plain, twisted or plaited, arranged into a variety of intricate designs. The use of filigree can be traced back to Mesopotamia, appearing around 2000 BC. The method which the wire was used without a metal foundation forming an openwork design, is found in European jewellery until the 15th century and was revived in England in the Victorian era.
A fabulous demi-parure. In the mid-nineteenth century, Ancient Etruscan tombs were discovered and excavated, leading to a revival movement of ancient styles and techniques. Lapis Lazuli was found in many ancient pieces of jewellery, and in the case of this demi-parure, contrasts beautifully with the delicate gold filigree work of the bead caps. The earrings and necklace in this set match perfectly and would look stunning paired with a strapless evening gown.
