Akelo, Master of Granulation

Andrea Cagnetti, known as Akelo (God of Water) is an academic jeweller, sculptor, and designer from the Etruscan town of Viterbo. Akelo draws inspiration from his extensive research into the ancient Etruscan, Greek, and Roman craftsmanship. His trademark techniques of micro granulation and filigree bring modernity to antique designs.

Andrea Cagnetti, known as ‘Akelo’, was born in 1967 in the Italian region of Etruria, in a village built over ancient Etruscan ruins. Akelo trained as a master goldsmith and works in the tradition of Ancient Etruscan jewellery, creating expertly crafted works in gold. His trademark techniques of micro granulation and filigree work echo the designs of antiquity. He has researched ancient techniques in order to accurately practise them in his own craft, resulting in a body of work that is impressive and compelling.

Works by Akelo are in the permanent collections of several museums, including the Vatican Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Newark Museum. The Duchess of Cornwall owns a necklace crafted by Akelo, which features the artist’s signature knit chain and a delicate pendant set with garnets.
