An early 20th century Suffragette amethyst, pearl and enamel bracelet, consisting of five round faceted amethysts graduating in size from the center, connected with four green and white enamelled links of clover and scroll design each centrally-set with a single round pearl measuring 0.3 mm in diameter, to a fancy link chain with hidden box clasp and a safety chain, all mounted in gold, circa 1910, measuring approximately 9 x 0.9 cm, gross weight 12.6 grams.
A wonderful Suffragette bracelet. This bracelet is the perfect example of a suffragette bracelet, which featured green, white and velvet; an acrostic for the sentiment “give women votes”. This bracelet would have been worn by a sympathiser of the suffrage movement and was likely treasured by the wearer. In 1908, Mrs Pethick-Lawrence, editor of the newspaper ‘Votes for Women’, described the green as a means to represent “hope”, the violet, for “freedom and dignity” and the white, for “purity”. Though delicate and dainty in design, the significance and meaning behind this bracelet make it a truly remarkable piece. A lovely bracelet.
