More informationA diamond and cultured pearl chocker necklace, the Edwardian diamond centrepiece with openwork scroll design decorations, set with old European cut diamonds estimated to weigh in total approximately 4 ¾ carats, all millegrain-set in platinum, circa 1910, strung with nine rows of cultured pearls measuring 3.5-4mm n diameter, to a bayonet-style clasp, accompanied by detachable brooch fitting, the centrepiece measuring 4.4 x 2.6cm, the necklace measuring 34 x 3.3cm, gross weight 70 grams.
This is an exquisite example of a turn of the century choker, which were greatly promoted by Princess Alexandra of Denmark in the late Victorian period. She loved chokers and liked to wear several rows of pearls at a time for the practical reason of hiding a scar on her neck. This style soon became fashion, and this treasured piece is part of the collection of Bentley and Skinner.
