A 19th century grisaille enamel ring, the blue and white enamel oval panel centre, painted in cameo style, depicting Erato, the Muse of Lyric poetry playing the lyre, to a blue background, surrounded by a gold beaded border, all to a blue guilloché enameled band with white floral motif, all to a yellow gold mount, circa 1880, hallmarked Vienna 18ct gold, the oval center measuring 1.1cm long, the band measuring 0.6cm wide, finger size X, gross weight 5.1 grams.
This exquisite ring features detailed white on blue grisaille enamel. The band and face of the ring are decorated with royal blue enamel and bordered by yellow gold. On the ring’s centre is a delicate white enamel figure of Erato, the muse of lyric poetry. The grisaille enamel gives the look of a fine cameo carving, and the subject matter references ancient Greece. This ring is a perfect example of late nineteenth century neoclassicism, which combined the popular neoclassical styles of the early nineteenth century with an ornate sense of high Victorian taste.
