A diamond, emerald and ruby en trembant dragonfly brooch

Description

A diamond, emerald and ruby en trembant dragonfly brooch, the thorax set with the an old European-cut diamond estimated to weigh 1.1 carats, assessed to be of H-I colour and VS clarity, surrounded by a frame of calibre-cut emeralds, the tail set with nine faceted emeralds estimated to weigh approximately 2 carats, the wings set with two old European-cut diamonds estimated to weigh 0.65 carats each, assessed to be of G-H colour and VS clarity, and embellished with small rose and old European-cut diamonds estimated to weigh a further total of 2.5 carats, the eyes set with two oval faceted rubies estimated to weigh 1/3 of a carat in total, all mounted in platinum and yellow gold with gold brooch fittings, circa 1950, measuring 7.6×6.4cm, gross weight 29.4 grams.

An exquisite brooch fashioned as a dragonfly with its glimmering wings spread. Made in 1950, this brooch takes inspiration from Victorian insect jewellery and naturalistic themes, which were popular during the time of rapid urbanisation. Jewellery inspired by the natural world was admired for its virtuous quality and was worn by many women at the time. The vivid emeralds which comprise the body of the dragonfly are truly captivating, and contrast beautifully with the delicate looking wings. As was common for traditional Victorian insect jewellery, small oval rubies make up the eyes of this dragonfly and add another nice touch of colour to this piece. The ‘En trembant’ element to the brooch gives a sense of movement and life to the creature and allows the diamonds to shimmer beautifully in the light when the dragonfly trembles. This fabulous brooch is the perfect statement piece and would look fantastic against a dark coat for a formal event.
