An exquisite Fabergé brooch. Fabergé was established in St Petersburg in 1842, and by the late nineteenth century, was Russia’s largest and best-known jewellery house. The house has become known for their royal commissions and their close ties to the family of Tsar Nicholas II. This brooch features a diagonal square shaped plaque with a yellow gold frame set with neoclassical laurel motifs and vibrant rubies set to each corner. The plaque is decorated with fine white guilloché enamel, in the middle of which is set a diamond-set Russian Imperial eagle motif. The double headed eagle is set with glittering rose-cut diamonds, which catch the light wonderfully. The double-headed eagle motif can be traced back to the reign of Peter the Great and was a strong symbol of Imperial Russia. This brooch bears the signature of Fabergé workmaster August Holmstrom, who was known for producing many jewellery pieces for Fabergé.
