The Emperors Necklace, an early Victorian hardstone cameo necklace, the twelve oval chalcedony cameo plaques, each carved with the profile of a Roman Emperor, all mounted in close-backed yellow gold rub-over settings, each with the name of the Emperor engraved on the back and linked by a yellow gold double trace chain, circa 1840, measuring approximately 41 x 2cm, gross weight 58.31 grams.
A spectacular early Victorian necklace. This necklace reflects the early nineteenth century interest in Ancient Roman motifs: famously, Napoleon was captivated by cameos, and Josephine’s Bonaparte owned a tiara of cameos given to her by Napoleon. Cameos became popular as the neoclassical style swept Europe in the early nineteenth century, and this necklace is the embodiment of this neoclassical style. This necklace sits beautifully at the base of the neck and makes a stunning, historical statement piece.
